When is Thanksgiving break?

Thanksgiving break is built around Thanksgiving Day, the fourth Thursday of November. Almost every school district in the country closes for at least Thursday and Friday, and many also give Wednesday off. A growing number of districts close for the whole week of Thanksgiving, giving students and teachers nine days off including the weekends.

Why districts differ

Whether a district takes two, three or five days depends on local choices, such as the number of instructional days the state requires, teacher contracts and the wish to cut down on absences before the holiday. Some districts use the Monday and Tuesday for parent-teacher conferences or teacher workdays. The table above shows the dates for your district.

Colleges and universities usually close from Wednesday to Sunday, and many students travel home for the holiday.

Tips for Thanksgiving break

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after are among the busiest travel days of the year, with packed airports and highways. If you can, travel earlier in the week or return on Monday. The Friday after Thanksgiving, Black Friday, is the start of the holiday shopping season.
