When is spring break?

Spring break is a one-week break in March or April. Districts set their own dates: some tie spring break to Easter, so that Good Friday or Easter Monday falls within it, while others choose a fixed week in March, often in the middle of the spring semester. As a result, spring break can fall anywhere from early March to late April, depending on the district and the year.

College spring break

Colleges and universities have their own spring break, usually a week in March. It doesn't always line up with the local school district, so families with both college students and younger children may find their breaks don't overlap. The table above shows the dates for school districts.

College spring break is famous for beach trips to places such as Florida and Mexico, which makes those destinations busy and expensive in March.

Tips for spring break

Because spring break is spread over several weeks across the country, popular destinations are busy for much of March and April. Theme parks, national parks and beach towns can be crowded, so book early. If your dates are flexible, check which weeks neighboring districts are off and plan around the busiest ones.
